“Walls Engraved Pottery” Presentation by Toney Aid hosted by Ozarks Heritage Research Center @ Garnett Library
Sep 15 @ 6:00 pm

Toney received a master’s degree in art history in 1973 from the University of Missouri. In 1990 his friend Roy Hathcock, a member of the Cherokee Tribe who had published two volumes on Native American pottery, encouraged Toney to research pottery made during the Mississippian period, 1200 – 1700 AD. Toney’s library now holds over 1,000 volumes and 2,000 journals. He has published several articles on the subject and has a new book out, Walls Engraved Pottery.

Toney’s description of the presentation, “My talk describes how I assembled information on all known examples of Walls Engraved pottery. It was made by Indigenous people living in the Missouri bootheel and NE Arkansas during Mississippian times, AD 1200 – 1700. The talk will discuss a wide range of engraved pottery, the images on them, and why it is important to study them. They introduce us to the way Mississippian people viewed their world, ideas that are important for everyone in today’s world.”

This event is sponsored by the Ozarks Heritage Research Center and West Plains Council on the Arts. Refreshments provided.
