“A Beautiful Mess” BHC Exhibit @ West Plains Civic Center Mezzanine
May 14 all-day

Open for viewing during regular hours of Civic Center operation.

The West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and Ozarks Healthcare Behavioral Health Center (OZH) have partnered to bring a themed collection of submissions by area residents to the West Plains Civic Center. WPCA will host the exhibition of works in the Gallery at the Center from May 4, 2025 – May 15, 2025. The Gallery, on the mezzanine, is open to the public during regular Civic Center hours.
Coordinator Kathleen Morrissey says, “WPCA is honored to facilitate this art show during Mental Health Month.  Art has long been considered an excellent outlet for one to express themselves.
The 2026 Mental Health month’s art show theme is “A Beautiful Mess”. This competition invites area adults (18+ years of age), High School students (9-12th grade), Middle School Students (5th – 8th grade), 2nd grade – 4th grade, and 1st grade and below to provide their artistic interpretation of what that means. All media types are accepted.
Submissions from Caulfield, Licking, Houston, Mountain Grove, Mountain View, Birch Tree, Winona and West Plains will be participating in this exhibit.
“Art can provide a creative outlet for expressing and processing emotions, particularly those that are difficult to put into words. This can help individuals to release feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression, and promote a sense of emotional release and catharsis.” says Bob Holmes, Art Show Coordinator from Ozarks Healthcare Behavioral Health Center.
A Meet-the-Artists event will be held on Friday, May 15th from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. in the Gallery at the Center. The public is invited to attend, meet the artists, view and discuss the pieces on display.
For more information and rules about the exhibit, contact Art Show coordinator Bob Holmes B.Holmes@ozhcare.com 417-274-8988 or WPCA Coordinator Kathleen Morrissey at 417-293-7751.  WPCA receives funding from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.

“A Road to Remember” Banner Ceremony @ West Plains Civic Center
May 25 @ 11:00 am

Join us May 25th at 11am on the front lawn of the West Plains Civic Center. This will be the reveal of our community’s Veteran Memorial Banners. They are displayed throughout downtown in honor of the brave men and women who have served our country.

This project was created as a Girl Scout Gold Award in partnership with the city and AMVETS to recognize and remember local veterans through personalized memorial banners that will proudly hang throughout downtown beginning Memorial Day.

The ceremony will include:
• A proclamation from the Mayor
• Remarks about the project and the veterans being honored
• Refreshments provided by AMVETS (more details to come)
• An opportunity to stroll through downtown and view the banners with family and friends

We invite the community to come together in remembrance, gratitude, and celebration of the heroes who have served our nation. We hope you will join us for this special community tribute.
