Abandoned Art Project ~ Community Paint Day hosted by Just Another Human
Aug 18 @ 4:00 pm
What is an Abandoned Art Project?

An abandoned art project is a beautiful act of anonymous kindness. Artists (that means you—whether you consider yourself one or not!) create small pieces of art and then “abandon” them in public places for strangers to find. It’s not trash—it’s a treasure. A little burst of color and emotion left behind on a park bench, library shelf, gas pump, or restaurant table, just waiting to brighten someone’s day. These pieces often come with a small tag that says something like, “I’m not lost—I’m a gift! Take me home.” That’s it. No cost, no strings, just a random act of creativity meant to make someone smile.

Why It Matters – And How It Can Change a Mindset
Art has power. Sometimes, just knowing someone cared enough to create something for “anyone” is enough to soften a hard day. For someone struggling with loneliness, depression, or just the monotony of life, finding that tiny piece of art can be a spark. A reminder that beauty still exists. That someone, somewhere, cares. And those small sparks? They can shift thoughts. Shift moods. Shift mindsets.
It might seem like “just a painting,” but to someone else, it’s hope. Long-term, this kind of experience can help restore a person’s belief in humanity—and in themselves. It’s proof that kindness still finds a way, even in unexpected places.
Let’s make art. Let’s make smiles. Let’s make a difference.
Join us for an Abandoned Art Project where we’ll paint together, laugh together, and spread joy across West Plains.
We’ll provide 50 mini canvases, paint, brushes, and sealer—all free! You bring the good vibes. ✨
When you’re done, you can:
✅ Keep your painting as a reminder of a good day
OR
✅ Leave it with us to be sealed and secretly placed around town the following weekend—ready to be found by someone who needs a smile.
Let’s create art that changes moods, minds, and maybe even lives.
Because sometimes, the tiniest painting can be the biggest gesture of hope.

Methods of Transportation in the Ozarks a presentation by Rick Hamby hosted by Ozarks Heritage Research Center @ MSU-WP Garnett Library
Aug 19 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Officials with the Ozarks Heritage Research Center (OHRC) at Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) will host a special presentation by Cowboy Rick Hamby, a fifth generation Missouri Ozarks native who hosts historical radio shows and organizes the Journey Stagecoach trips and appearances in the region. His presentation will focus on modes of transportation in the Ozarks and along the trails through the western United States from 1850 through 1900, organizers said.

More about Hamby -Hamby grew up with a love for history in a family of great old-time storytellers. “My appreciation for the challenges those before us faced has opened many doors for me to explore,” he explains.

Several years ago, Hamby added an important piece of American history to his stable when he purchased an original 1880 Overland stagecoach. The stagecoach was used in Arizona in the 1800s, in upstate New York in the 1950s, then became the very first ride at the newly opened Silver Dollar City in Branson in the 1960s. Since 1999, the coach has been known as the Journey Stagecoach whose mission is to share history and the bonds of friendship through several trips across the Ozarks and the American southwest.

“We partner with elementary school kids in Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona and deliver pen pal letter via the stagecoach, which is pulled with a four-horse hitch,” Hamby explained.

In addition to the stagecoach trips, Hamby has hosted the “Just for Kids Radio Roundup” and “Great Moments in American History with Cowboy Rick” radio shows on local radio stations for several years. When he’s not sharing stories about American history, Hamby operates and manages the family farm near West Plains.

The Aug. 19 event is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be served. For more information about the event, contact Rebekah McKinney at 417-255-7949 or RebekahMcKinney@MissouriState.edu.

History of the Rotoscope ~ a presentation by State Historical Society of Missouri @ Lincoln School
Aug 21 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Kathleen Seale, coordinator of SHSMO’s Rolla and Springfield Research Centers, digs into a unique SHSMO collection that details a 1950s film technology developed by two Rolla theatre owners: Rowe Carney and Tom Smith. Their invention of the rotoscope used a special single camera for filming and a cinema system to project movies in a 180-degree spectrum on a curved screen. The rotoscope was ahead of its time and well before the IMAX motion picture technology emerged. Seale’s presentation includes historic film clips shot in Rolla, Mo. using the rotoscope. Experience the “thrills and chills” of archiving this collection and learn more about these lesser-known Missouri innovators.
