Art at the Library ~ Marc Brannon Artist @ West Plains Public Library
May 7 @ 9:00 am – 6:00 pm

The West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and West Plains Public Library (WPPL) will partner to bring quarterly art displays to the library. Photography from local artist Marc Brannan will be featured through the end of June 2024. Visitors may view the display at the library during their open hours, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

WPPL Director Greg Carter shares, “Here at the library, our vision is that we are a space where all come to learn, create, discover, and connect. There is no better way to accomplish that vision than displaying local pieces of art for the community to peruse and appreciate. We are always proud to partner with the Council on the Arts to bring the beauty of art to our patrons.”

Marc Brannan grew up on his family farm near Willow Springs, MO., and currently lives and works in West Plains. He started playing with cameras and taking pictures at a very young age. He loved playing in the old barn and enjoyed being outdoors as much as possible surrounded by nature. His parents nurtured his desire to travel and see new places. His dad encouraged him to learn and enjoy history, especially the history of his family and where they came from.

Brannan says, “I have always enjoyed the stories of my mom attending one-room schools when she was a kid, and I think that is a big reason I seek them out to photograph today. There are fewer of them around every year, as a lot of them slowly fall into disrepair and collapse unless they have been cared for or restored over the years. I love incorporating them into my landscape photography as much as I can, especially as a way of preserving their history. I have started to reach out with my photography and have started trying to capture more shots in other areas, as well as different states, both in nature and landscape scenes. Lately I have focused more on reaching out to new parts of Missouri, and trying to show the viewer that there is so much more around us than we are used to seeing locally. The pictures that I have selected for this exhibition show a range of my photos that depict the history and outdoor settings that our area, as well as other parts of the country, are known for—whether historic or in the natural beauty that we might otherwise only see if you were to travel there and see for yourself.”

A Meet-the-Artists event will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, 3:00-4:30 PM, hosted by the library, 750 W. Broadway, in West Plains. The public is invited to attend, meet the artist, view, and discuss the pieces on display. Partial funding for this exhibit is provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.

For more information about the exhibit, contact Greg Carter greg.carter@westplains.gov at the library or WPCA Coordinator Audrey Scott at Audrey.scott@zizzers.org

What Rock Buildings Say about the People of the Ozarks presented by Barbara Williams @ Garnett Library - Ozarks Heritage Research Center
May 14 @ 6:00 pm

From organizers:

Local artist Barbara Williams will present “What Rock Buildings Say About the People of the Ozarks” at 6 p.m. May 14 at the Ozarks Heritage Research Center (OHRC). The center is located inside Missouri State University-West Plains’ (MSU-WP) Garnett Library, 304 W. Trish Knight St.

Williams, an adjunct art faculty member at MSU-WP, will discuss the strengths of the Ozarks’ people as seen through their rock buildings.

A native of Myrtle, Williams received her bachelor’s degree in art from Missouri State University in Springfield and her master’s degree in art from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Throughout her education and adult life, the people and material culture of the Ozarks continue as a central theme of her art. Beginning as cathartic portraits of family, a slow steady pursuit of this theme has resulted in widely exhibited paintings, prints (etchings), mixed media paintings, and photographs.

In 2000, Williams began a series documenting, drawing, painting and photographing Ozarks rock buildings (native stone masonry). The result was numerous exhibits, slide presentations, magazine articles, and two Ozarks Public Television programs on the topic.

Art at the Library ~ Marc Brannon Artist @ West Plains Public Library
May 15 @ 9:00 am – 6:00 pm

Meet-the-Artists “Note to Self” Art Exhibit hosted by The West Plains Council on the Arts in partnership Ozarks Healthcare Behavioral Health Center @ West Plains Civic Center mezzanine
May 17 @ 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

The public is invited to attend, meet the artists, view, and discuss the pieces on display for the “Note to Self” art exhibit.

More about the exhibit: The West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and Ozarks Healthcare Behavioral Health Center (OZH) have again partnered to bring a themed collection of submissions by area residents to the West Plains Civic Center. WPCA will host the exhibition of works in the Gallery at the Center from May 6 – May 17, 2024. The Gallery, on the mezzanine, is open to the public during regular Civic Center hours.

“WPCA is honored to facilitate this art show during Mental Health Month. Art has long been considered an excellent outlet for one to express themselves,” say organizers.

The 2024 Mental Health month’s art show theme is “Note to Self”. This competition invites area adults (18+ years of age), High School students (9-12th grade), Middle School Students (5th – 8th grade), 2nd grade – 4th grade, and 1st grade and below to provide their artistic interpretation of what that means. All media types are accepted.

Submissions from Caulfield, Licking, Mansfield, Mountain Grove, Mountain View- Birch Tree, Winona and West Plains will be participating in this exhibit.

“Art can provide a creative outlet for expressing and processing emotions, particularly those that are difficult to put into words. This can help individuals to release feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression, and promote a sense of emotional release and catharsis.” says Lora Moulds, Community Support Specialist and Art Show Coordinator at Ozarks Healthcare Behavioral Health Center.
For more information about the exhibit, contact OZH coordinator Lora Moulds l.moulds@ozhcare.com or WPCA at info@westplainsarts.org
