West Plains Arts Alliance members, the West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and the Harlin Museum of West Plains (Harlin), will bring renowned artist Spencer Meagher to town for a three-day plein air workshop. The workshop will be held 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily August 25, 26 and 27, 2022. Thursday and Friday will begin at the pavilion at Galloway Creek Nature Park, and Saturday’s workshop will be held at Twin Bridges.
WPCA Coordinator Janey Hale says, “West Plains Council on the Arts is fortunate to host a Plein Air workshop by Spencer Meagher. Meagher is a well-known Plein Air and studio artist. He has been juried into some of the premier events in the US. He is proficient in watercolor, acrylic, and oil, and is an excellent teacher of these media.”
Spencer Meagher first discovered his love for art as a young child. He found he was able to express himself through drawing and painting. He refined his skills over many decades with practice and dedication. As an adult, he has attended many workshops to gain a better understanding of his craft. Spencer now paints full time and travels all over the country attending competitions and shows, as well as teaching workshops. Spencer is a Plein Air and studio artist who works in watercolor, oil and acrylic. When he is not traveling, he works out of his studio in Mt. Vernon, IL.
“Three days painting rocky rivers, wooded hillsides and open meadows in one of the most scenic regions in Missouri,” says Meagher. “Bring your paints and join me as we learn how to simplify complex scenes, create strong compositions and mix colors that reflect the mood of the scene.”
Students will have the opportunity to follow along as Spencer demonstrates the process of painting acrylic/oil en Plein Air. The class will focus on various components and techniques used to apply these viscous paints. Emphasis will be placed on developing a strong drawing as the backbone of your painting. Students will learn Spencer’s tried and true method of accurately capturing the framework of the scene before you. We will discuss editing “clutter” out of your design.
Obstacles unique to Plein Air will also be addressed, i.e., changing light, temperatures, wind, bugs, curious on-lookers. The class will help students build confidence while painting in public.
Class structure is appropriate for ALL skill levels. Students should come prepared to paint as many as two 11×14”paintings each day of the workshop. Bring additional panels or paper to do exercises on.
This class will be limited to a smaller size than most so Meagher can spend adequate amounts of time with each participant.
Total cost for the three-day workshop is $300, payable at time of registration. The registration form is available to download from the website at http://westplainsarts.org or you can call 417-293-2325 to request a copy be mailed to you. Space is limited for this workshop, and the registration deadline is August 15, 2022.
Details about supplies, etc. will be sent via email to those who register.
