Local artist Ann Kulpa’s artwork will be featured on OzSBI’s first floor from the beginning of October through the end of December 2023. The West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and Ozarks Small Business Incubator (OzSBI) have partnered to bring quarterly art displays to the incubator. Visitors may view the display at the incubator during OzSBI’s business hours, anytime between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
WPCA Coordinator Janey Hale describes the works, “Ann Kulpa gives the viewer multiple layers in her collages. It’s worth your time to pause and explore the various media, textural components, and use of color to create nonrepresentational art.”
Kulpa is a self-taught creative who has been working on her art since she was a child. She has lived in Cabool for 20 years with her husband. Ann lived in Colorado for many years before moving to the Ozarks. In Colorado, Ann competed in juried art shows earning numerous awards and accepting commission work as a portrait artist and mural painter. While living in Cabool she discovered the creative process of Digital Art Painting. She became very involved in digital work for years while continuing her work in Photography, Pencil, and Pen & Ink drawings on the side. Using these mediums, she has won awards in juried art shows in this area.
Because of her interest in the process of creating intuitively, in 2022 Ann returned to the form of abstract art that she loved to create as a child. In the last two years she has enrolled in several educational courses which she is using as a springboard in creating her multi-media, multi-layered, intuitive artwork. As she develops this art form, she hopes to introduce portraiture into her work. “I am enjoying this challenging process which is much like working a creative puzzle. The intuitive nature of creating in this way means I am always surprised throughout the process,” says Kulpa.

At these art auctions He has helped raise money for many local charities close to his heart such as ORC\West Plains Regional Animal Shelter, The Bridges Program of West Plains Schools, Rescue and Defend, the West Plains Optimist Club, Queen City Shout Poverty Relief, CASA, Christos House and Play it Forward to name a few.
“My mission statement is simply: You can’t move forward if you don’t give back. I paint live with bands and do a lot of cool things on a canvas, but the real art is finding a way to help someone with your art and that’s what I’m striving to do.”

NASA Ambassador Dr. David J. Thomas will be in West Plains from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, to discuss safe viewing of the Sun ahead of the April 8, 2024, Total Solar Eclipse. Thomas will bring a solar-filtered telescope to set up on the lawn of the Civic Center to allow people to see the sun safely in its usual state.
The viewing event will coincide with a reception in the lobby of the Civic Center to recognize and celebrate the efforts of the West Plains High School Earth Science class taught by Natalie Brazeal. The class is working on a series of eclipse-related projects, and the students are helping to promote West Plains activities which will be held in conjunction with the April total eclipse. The class will have their art and science projects on display on the mezzanine at the civic center from Oct. 24 through Nov. 15.
City of West Plains Tourism Manager Melissa Wharton said, “We are happy that Mrs. Brazeal and her class have taken an interest in the eclipse and that they are working on projects to help inform the community about the special opportunity a total eclipse presents. We’re looking forward to seeing what they’re creating, and we’re pleased that Dr. Thomas is going to be here to be part of what promises to be a fun and educational afternoon.”
Thomas is a native of Yakima, Washington. He says that he was almost three years old when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon, and he has been interested in space exploration ever since. Broadly educated in biology and other sciences, Thomas has worked in industry, government and education.
Among his experiences, he worked at a small research company in Oregon that helped to develop the life support systems for the Space Station. He has also worked at summer programs at NASA’s Ames and Kennedy Space Centers. Currently, Dr. Thomas is a professor of biology at Lyon College, Batesville, Arkansas, where he is also the campus representative to the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium. He actively pursues research in astrobiology and is interested in all space missions that provide insight into the evolution and distribution of life in the Universe.

MTB Bike Group Ride @ JMB Park (off HWY BB, across from West Plains Municipal Golf Course) 2pm ride start time – be sure to arrive a little early to unload, check your bike, stage your gear for the ride and greet new and old friends.
We want everyone to LOVE biking as much as we do! This is a no-drop group ride, meaning we will ride at the pace of the group for the first lap. All ages welcome. Those who would like to ride additional laps can call a fast loop (or whatever pace they want to set) and whoever wants to join, joins in.
You can take a break and hop back in when you are ready. Those that skip a loop may choose to join in a bike game on the parking lot.
*** BONUS feature — we will have an obstacle course (aka Short Course) set up in the grass field by the parking lot to practice riding skills before and after the ride in the woods! If you have a rider that isn’t yet ready for the woods, feel free to stay at the Short Course and practice pedaling.

WPCA board members will open the luncheon with discussions on current plans, programs available through Arts Alliance partners, and invite discussion regarding future arts endeavors for the area. Each quarterly lunch is an opportunity to open conversations with current board members and contribute to the future of the arts in West Plains.

The West Plains Photography Club currently has 34 members and meetings are at 6:30 p.m. the second Monday of each month in the Missouri State University-West Plains Creative Discovery Center, 411 West Main Street, Suite 1. Everyone regardless of age or ability is invited to join the club which has no membership dues.
The purpose of the club is to share and support everyone’s passion for photography arts whether they are a beginner or have been engaged in photography for many years. While living in Cabool she discovered the creative process of Digital Art Painting. She became very involved in digital work for years while continuing her work in Photography, Pencil, and Pen & Ink drawings on the side. Using these mediums, she has won awards in juried art shows in this area.
Because of her interest in the process of creating intuitively, in 2022 Ann returned to the form of abstract art that she loved to create as a child. In the last two years she has enrolled in several educational courses which she is using as a springboard in creating her multi-media, multi-layered, intuitive artwork. As she develops this art form, she hopes to introduce portraiture into her work. “I am enjoying this challenging process which is much like working a creative puzzle. Officials with The Kloz Klozet invite everyone to their “The Art of Fashion” fashion show and luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the West Plains Country Club, 402 Country Club Dr., in West Plains.
The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Garnett Library and benefits the Garnett Library at Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP).
It will feature the latest styles in dresses, slacks, accessories, shoes, fashion jewelry, travel accessories and handbags from The Kloz Klozet, owned by Florence James.
Doors for the Nov. 16 fashion show will open at 11:30 a.m. for those who wish to come early to socialize and participate in a silent and live auction. Admission is $30, with proceeds going to the library.
Over the past 20 years, the semiannual fashion show events have raised more than $51,000, said Rebekah McKinney, director of library services at the Garnett Library.
“Everyone at the Garnett Library is grateful to the Friends, attendees and the fashion show business owners for all they do to enrich the library and help our students be successful,” McKinney said.
Seating is limited, so those planning to attend must make reservations early. Reservations are a commitment, and the Friends appreciate your donation even if you are unable to attend, organizers said.
Seating will be open, but tables will be available on a first come, first served basis for those who would like to bring their friends or co-workers to the event, organizers said.
