Natalie Brazeal’s West Plains High School Earth Science class is working on a series of eclipse-related projects, and the students are helping to promote West Plains activities which will be held in conjunction with the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse. The class will have their art and science projects on display on the mezzanine at the civic center from Oct. 24 through Nov. 15.
City of West Plains Tourism Manager Melissa Wharton said, “We are happy that Mrs. Brazeal and her class have taken an interest in the eclipse and that they have created projects to help inform the community about the special opportunity a total eclipse presents.”
NASA Ambassador Dr. David J. Thomas will be in West Plains from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, to discuss safe viewing of the Sun ahead of the April 2024 eclipse. Dr. Thomas will bring a solar-filtered telescope to set up on the lawn of the Civic Center to allow people to see the sun safely in its usual state. The viewing event will coincide with a reception in the lobby of the Civic Center to recognize and celebrate the efforts of Mrs. Brazeal’s class.

Officials with the Ozarks Heritage Research Center (OHRC) at Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) will host a presentation on the “Mythological Monsters of the Ozarks” beginning at 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Garnett Library, 304 W. Trish Knight St., in West Plains.
The presentation will be given by Dr. Brooks Blevins, the Noel Boyd Professor of Ozarks Studies at Missouri State University in Springfield.
Blevins recently published his capstone work – three volumes constituting the definitive history of the Ozarks – with the University of Illinois Press. He also is the author or editor of 10 other books, including “Arkansas/Arkansaw: How Bear Hunters, Hillbillies, and Good Ol’ Boys Defined a State.”
Blevins currently serves on the editorial boards of the “Arkansas Historical Quarterly” and the “Missouri Historical Review,” and co-hosts regional history and culture segments on Ozark Highlands Radio.

“My mission statement is simply: You can’t move forward if you don’t give back. I paint live with bands and do a lot of cool things on a canvas, but the real art is finding a way to help someone with your art and that’s what I’m striving to do.”
WPPL Director Greg Carter shares, ‘Here at the library, our vision is that we are a space where all come to learn, create, discover, and connect. There is no better way to accomplish that vision than displaying local pieces of art for the community to peruse and appreciate. We are always proud to partner with the Council on the Arts to bring the beauty of art to our patrons.”
A Meet-the-Artists event will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, 4-5:30 PM, hosted by the library, 750 W. Broadway, in West Plains. The public is invited to attend, meet the artist, view, and discuss the pieces on display. Partial funding for this exhibit is provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
