Barbara Williams Art Show hosted by West Plains Council on the Arts @ Ozarks Small Business Incubator
Mar 25 @ 8:30 am – 4:30 pm

Local artist Barbara Williams artwork will be featured on OzSBI’s first floor from early January through the end of March 2025. The West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and Ozarks Small Business Incubator (OzSBI) have partnered to bring quarterly art displays to the incubator.  Visitors may view the display at the incubator during OzSBI’s business hours, anytime between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Artist Statement: “Always the Ozarks: frequently family, often rock buildings” – Rural Ozarks family images in their environment–drawings, etchings and mixed media collage have been the major thrust of my work for fifty years. Portions of these etchings have been reconfigured and are displayed alongside the original etchings. The mother and child theme appears frequently in this exhibit. These pieces are of my own family, though not taken from actual photographs, they are imagined, could-have-been snapshots.

Barbara Williams was born and raised in the Missouri Ozarks and earned art degrees from Southwest Missouri State University (Missouri State University), Springfield, and Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, graduating with an MFA. After graduation she spent one year traveling and working in Europe visiting countries of favorite artists. In 1997 she returned to Europe taking a class in monotype printmaking in Florence, Italy.

Her work has been included in international juried printmaking exhibitions in England, Italy, Poland, USA, Yugoslavia and numerous juried national and regional shows in the USA, including one held at the Smithsonian Institution, which was also included in a year-long traveling exhibit. Williams’ prints and mixed media collage paintings are included in permanent collections in Little Rock, AR (Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts); Boulder, CO; Swannanoa, NC (Swannanoa College) and in private collections in the USA and Italy and has been in four Watercolor USA, Springfield, MO, exhibits. Influenced by impressions from an Ozarks 1940s-50s childhood the prints and mixed media paintings are personal expressions and help preserve the history of that time and place. Williams served as an adjunct art faculty for 30 years at MSU, West Plains, MO.

A Meet-the-Artist event will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2-4 p.m. in OzSBI’s lobby at 408 Washington Ave. in West Plains. The public is invited to attend to meet Williams and view and discuss the pieces on display.

Songs of the Ozarks Featuring Dawn Larsen @ Ozarks Heritage Research Center @ Garnett Library
Mar 25 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
A special presentation, “Songs of the Ozarks,” featuring storyteller and singer-songwriter Dawn Larsen will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at the Garnett Library.

Larsen, a fifth-generation resident of Taney County, will share traditional songs and stories from the Ozarks, as well as original compositions inspired by her deep connection to the region. Her recent songwriting residency in Northern Ireland in 2024 sparked a newfound appreciation for her home, leading her to write her first song about the Ozarks while overseas.

A Professor Emeritus from Francis Marion University in South Carolina, Larsen specializes in American popular entertainment, particularly rural comedy. Her accolades include the 2022 Atlanta Fringe Festival Critics’ Choice Award and the 2020 St. Lou Fringe National Artist of the Year. She has released two CDs of original music and recently published an article in OzarksWatch Magazine about her decade-long operation of the last traveling Toby tent show in the country.

The event is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be served. Songs of the Ozarks featuring Dawn Larsen on Facebook.

Wulff-Risner Agriculture Science Center Dedication
Apr 4 @ 2:00 pm

Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP), Dr. Richard “Biff” Williams, President of Missouri State System, and the Missouri State Foundation invite the public to a dedication ceremony for the new Wulff-Risner Agriculture Science Center at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, at 911 Creamery Road.

The event will honor Dr. Linda Wulff-Risner, professor of agriculture, who donated her 40-acre farm, Risner Stables, to MSU-WP to support, enhance and grow its agriculture programs. The property will be named the Wulff-Risner Agriculture Science Center in recognition of the Wulff and Risner families’ legacy of service and generosity.

“Linda’s passion for teaching and agriculture is evident in everything she does at Missouri State-West Plains,” said MSU-WP Chancellor Dennis Lancaster. “Her generous gift ensures that her love for students and agriculture will continue to impact lives for generations to come. Her vision has become our vision.”

The Wulff-Risner Agriculture Science Center will serve as the hub for MSU-WP’s applied learning courses in animal and plant science, consolidating the university’s agriculture programs into one location. The property includes two large stables, offices, a tack room, hay barn, storage and kennel areas, and a 7,200-square-foot indoor riding arena, providing ample space to expand current offerings and add new programs.

“This donation is truly transformative for our agriculture programs,” said Dr. Michael Orf, vice chancellor of academic affairs. “It will significantly expand the hands-on learning opportunities available to our students, allowing us to offer more comprehensive training and develop new programs.”

Wulff-Risner has taught agriculture courses at MSU-WP for nearly 30 years as both a full-time and per-course instructor. She has supported the university through numerous gifts toward the agriculture department, veterinary programs, scholarships, Garnett Library and Grizzly Athletics. She is a member of The Founders Club at Missouri State University and received a Platinum Medallion in 2024.

“My hope is that this gift will provide future agriculture students with the opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences and hard work,” Wulff-Risner said. “It has always been my goal for this property to be a positive part of the community and a resource for agriculture education now and for years to come.”

For more information about the dedication ceremony, contact the MSU-WP advancement office at 417-255-7240 or email WPAdvancement@MissouriState.edu.

Listen to Poetry, Song Lyrics & Contemporary Songs ~ presentation by Dave Malone hosted by Ozarks Heritage Research Center @ Garnett Library
Apr 8 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

From organizers: A special presentation, “Listen to Poetry, Song Lyrics, and Contemporary Songs,” featuring poet and screenwriter Dave Malone. Malone’s multimedia presentation will feature short verse poems and song lyrics he has written, along with audio recordings of his lyrics set to music by Minneapolis-based musicians. Attendees will explore a unique form of verse poetry, hear song lyrics, and listen to recorded songs. The event is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be served.

Inspired by a writing challenge from Press 53, a literary press based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Malone’s poetry often draws from everyday objects and nature, including postage stamp quilts, scarecrows, and barn swallows. His work also ventures into the world of art, referencing figures such as Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, and Klaus Nomi.

For the past two years, Malone has participated in a singer/songwriter challenge group on Facebook, crafting lyrics for multiple songs. He will share the lyrics for “No Imitation,” “Sweet as Clementine,” and “Clark Gable If You’re Able,” as well as play audio recordings of his lyrics turned into songs, including “Down” by Matthew French, “Evangeline” by Doyle Turner, and “Let’s Let This Never End” by Sarah Morris.

A former instructor at MSU-West Plains, Malone taught composition and film courses. He holds degrees from Ottawa University and Indiana State and has authored several poetry collections, including Bypass (Aldrich Press, 2023). His work has been featured on NPR and in journals such as Midwest Review, San Pedro River Review, The Cape Rock, and Elder Mountain: A Journal of Ozark Studies.
