HONEST IMAGINATIONS DAY HABILITATION ARTWORK

TO BE FEATURED AT WEST PLAINS PUBLIC LIBRARY

JUNE 30 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2023

The West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and West Plains Public Library (WPPL) will partner to bring quarterly art displays to the library. Participants at Honest Imaginations Day Habilitation will provide pieces to be displayed June 30 through the end of September 2023. Visitors may view the display at the library during open hours, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

WPCA Coordinator Janey Hale says, “Honest Imaginations members bring a freshness and joy to the creation of art! It’s a must-see group of creative works.”

TJ Swift House (TJSH) is a Department of Mental Health contracted provider that supports people with disabilities. TJSH supports people in Individualized Supported Living (ISL) services where a person lives in their home. Support staff assists with daily living skills and being a part of the community. We also support people in Shared Living, where a person with disabilities lives with a family and is integrated into a family unit and community.

Honest Imaginations is a Day Habilitation facility operated by TJ Swift House, focused on helping the people we serve develop and use their artistic gifts and talents.

Honest Imaginations is a thriving gallery in the West Plains community. It serves as a place not only for people with developmental disabilities but also for community members by:

• Acknowledging and developing gifts
• Facilitating community connection through art projects, art shows, teaching classes, being taught, etc.
• Providing self-care through exercise, journaling, and other appropriate forms.
• Giving back through the skills and abilities of our participants in community projects.

The artists at Honest Imaginations range from 18 all the way to 63 years old and know no limits in life and art. Each artist has a style of their own and it shows in the art they create. Honest Imaginations has art on display at the Yellow House Community Arts Center and the Ozarks Welcome Center in West Plains. We also have art on display at the Neighborhood Tribe store in Mt. View Missouri. The sale of art on display creates a boost of confidence and feeling of acceptance in our participants. Honest Imaginations has sessions from 8:30 AM to 3pm Monday through Friday. Our goal is to create art, and to build friendships through that process.

“We create smiles at Honest Imaginations,” says Garrett Melby, the coordinator at the West Plains Location of Honest Imaginations at 23 Court Square. Melby is a local artist who is committed to the community, creating art-based fundraisers. He works with area bands, painting live while the bands play. Melby has worked with bands such as the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Ha-ha Tonka, and the Steel Drivers. With a degree in Art and Animation, Garrett has a passion for giving the artists of Honest Imaginations the opportunity to get exposure for their creations, and to help them grow in our community. The public is invited to attend, meet the artists, view, and discuss the pieces on display. Partial funding for this exhibit is provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.

The 67th annual ICGMA Convention and Awards Show will be held July 13-15 at “The Bridge Church,” formerly known as “The Barn Event Center,” located at 10105 S. 63 Highway, West Plains. Over 100 artists will perform over three days and nights, and it’s all free to the public. Artists like Barbara Fairchild and Roy Morris, James Payne, Bill Baker, Pam Blackstock, Bruce Haynes, Ray Epperson, The Tiptons, Bluegrass artists Stringed Union, The Waymasters, and many, many more will perform. Daily showcases are from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. Evening concerts are at 6:00 pm. For information, call 417-372-1129.

The Parks and Recreation Department requires that children under 12 be accompanied by an adult. (The pool typically closes for the season in mid-August.)

This exhibit is the one time of the year that the museum displays its Pioneers Of The Ozarks collection by  L.L. Broadfoot in its entirety* ; a series of eighty-eight charcoal drawings and oil paintings depicting actual people, places, and events of the Ozarks that the artist captured in the late 1930s-late 1940s.

A presentation by Dr. Brooks Blevins – who spends his days as a Missouri Humanities speaker, an MSU Professor of Ozark Studies, a resident historian, and an author – on the intricacies of language and the spoken word here in the Ozarks.

This lighthearted presentation explores early ethnic and cultural influences on the Ozarks through the lens of dialect and accent. It dismisses the old notion of Elizabethan dialect in the Ozarks and instead looks at words, phrases, and speech patterns that were once common in vernacular Ozark (and usually Appalachian) language, tracing their origins to European or colonial American roots.

The presentation invites frequent audience participation and includes a built-in “Talking Ozark” quiz. Natives or longtime residents of the Ozarks will enjoy revisiting styles and words that have probably gone unused for decades, and others will gain an appreciation for cultural diffusion and regional distinctiveness in Missouri—as well as the forces that constantly chip away at that distinctiveness.

Dr. Blevins’ lecture will coincide with the display of our Ozark Heritage Exhibit, which features L.L.Broadfoot’s Pioneers of the Ozarks collection of original charcoal sketches and oil paintings – depicting local people, customs, and traditions, and, as a whole, representing the last traces of the simpler world that was this region in the late 1930s/early 1940s. Along with each character portrait, the artist included a written portion with all the inflections and accents unique to each individual, telling a little portion of their personal story – and invoking a collective image that is unparalleled by any other collection of its kind.

It offers an interesting backdrop to the topic of language that Dr. Blevins will be covering. So, please, make plans to come to hear Dr. Blevins speak on, “How To Talk Ozark In Seven Simple Steps” at the Harlin Museum on June 15th at 1 pm. Free admission; donations are welcome. The Ozark Heritage exhibit will be on display at the museum until September 3rd, 2023.

ART DISPLAY AT OZSBI FEATURING THE “WATERCOLOR CREATIONS” OF JUDY NORTON

The West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and Ozarks Small Business Incubator (OzSBI) have partnered to bring quarterly art displays to the incubator. Local artist Judy Norton’s exhibit “Watercolor Creations” will be featured on OzSBI’s first floor June 30 through the end of September 2023. Visitors may view the display at the incubator during OzSBI’s business hours, anytime between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

WPCA Coordinator Janey Hale describes the works, “Judy Norton is a prolific painter of landscape, still life, and things found in nature. Whether from life or her imagination she brings a freshness to her work. A must-see show!”

Artist statement:

“Art has always been a big part in my life. It was always my favorite subject as a child, and I guess it still is. I started painting with oil but went quickly to watercolor because it was easier to transport. When my late husband was in the hospital at Little Rock with esophageal cancer, I painted a picture for every doctor and nurse that worked with him. I always joked I could have an art gallery in Little Rock for all the paintings I gave away and some day I’d be famous!

Later after he passed I met and married Tom, and he and I bought a winter place in an RV park in Texas. It was then I started a watercolor art class and got serious about painting. During COVID I had an art Zoom class five days a week with my students. It’s no wonder I have over 400 paintings in my possession. The Ozark Café restaurant was nice enough to let me hang some in their place.

I still paint twice a week now – once with the Ventures in Art group meeting at the First Christian Church on Tuesdays at 9:30, and then on Zoom on Friday mornings with my Texas students. I look forward to my showing at OzSBI and hope some of you come to view my “Watercolor Creations.”

A Meet-the-Artist event will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2-4 p.m. in OzSBI’s lobby at 408 Washington Ave. in West Plains. The public is invited to attend to meet Norton and view and discuss the pieces on display.

Hours of operation are noon to 5 p.m. daily with an evening swim Thursday from 5-8 p.m. The cost of admission is $5 for children ages 3-11 and $6 for ages 12 and up. Children under three are free. The Parks and Recreation Department requires that children under 12 be accompanied by an adult. (The pool typically closes for the season in mid-August.)

ART DISPLAY AT OZSBI FEATURING THE “WATERCOLOR CREATIONS” OF JUDY NORTON

The West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and Ozarks Small Business Incubator (OzSBI) have partnered to bring quarterly art displays to the incubator. Local artist Judy Norton’s exhibit “Watercolor Creations” will be featured on OzSBI’s first floor June 30 through the end of September 2023. Visitors may view the display at the incubator during OzSBI’s business hours, anytime between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

WPCA Coordinator Janey Hale describes the works, “Judy Norton is a prolific painter of landscape, still life, and things found in nature. Whether from life or her imagination she brings a freshness to her work. A must-see show!”

Artist statement:

“Art has always been a big part in my life. It was always my favorite subject as a child, and I guess it still is. I started painting with oil but went quickly to watercolor because it was easier to transport. When my late husband was in the hospital at Little Rock with esophageal cancer, I painted a picture for every doctor and nurse that worked with him. I always joked I could have an art gallery in Little Rock for all the paintings I gave away and some day I’d be famous!

Later after he passed I met and married Tom, and he and I bought a winter place in an RV park in Texas. It was then I started a watercolor art class and got serious about painting. During COVID I had an art Zoom class five days a week with my students. It’s no wonder I have over 400 paintings in my possession. The Ozark Café restaurant was nice enough to let me hang some in their place.

I still paint twice a week now – once with the Ventures in Art group meeting at the First Christian Church on Tuesdays at 9:30, and then on Zoom on Friday mornings with my Texas students. I look forward to my showing at OzSBI and hope some of you come to view my “Watercolor Creations.”

A Meet-the-Artist event will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2-4 p.m. in OzSBI’s lobby at 408 Washington Ave. in West Plains. The public is invited to attend to meet Norton and view and discuss the pieces on display.

TJ Swift House (TJSH) is a Department of Mental Health contracted provider that supports people with disabilities. TJSH supports people in Individualized Supported Living (ISL) services where a person lives in their home. Support staff assists with daily living skills and being a part of the community. We also support people in Shared Living, where a person with disabilities lives with a family and is integrated into a family unit and community.

Honest Imaginations is a Day Habilitation facility operated by TJ Swift House, focused on helping the people we serve develop and use their artistic gifts and talents.

Honest Imaginations is a thriving gallery in the West Plains community. It serves as a place not only for people with developmental disabilities but also for community members by:

• Acknowledging and developing gifts
• Facilitating community connection through art projects, art shows, teaching classes, being taught, etc.
• Providing self-care through exercise, journaling, and other appropriate forms.
• Giving back through the skills and abilities of our participants in community projects.

The artists at Honest Imaginations range from 18 all the way to 63 years old and know no limits in life and art. Each artist has a style of their own and it shows in the art they create. Honest Imaginations has art on display at the Yellow House Community Arts Center and the Ozarks Welcome Center in West Plains. We also have art on display at the Neighborhood Tribe store in Mt. View Missouri. The sale of art on display creates a boost of confidence and feeling of acceptance in our participants. Honest Imaginations has sessions from 8:30 AM to 3pm Monday through Friday. Our goal is to create art, and to build friendships through that process.

This exhibit is the one time of the year that the museum displays its Pioneers Of The Ozarks collection by  L.L. Broadfoot in its entirety* ; a series of eighty-eight charcoal drawings and oil paintings depicting actual people, places, and events of the Ozarks that the artist captured in the late 1930s-late 1940s.

Ozark Action, Inc. (OAI), the West Plains Arts Alliance, Howell County Health Department, and MU Extension are partnering to bring a day of arts experiences to West Plains. The event will be held Thursday, July 20, 2023, 1-4 p.m. in the Community Room at the MU Extension offices, 1376 Bill Virdon Blvd. in East Towne Village, West Plains, MO.

Attendees aged 60+ will have an opportunity to enjoy special hands-on art activities from a variety of local artists, enjoy refreshments catered by Sole Café, food demonstrations, and receive important updates on benefits provided in some specific Medicare/Medicaid programs.

Arts Alliance members will share information on their upcoming events as well as information about the “Party in the Path” West Plains Eclipse celebration planned for April 5-8, 2024. Door prizes will be awarded, including a gift basket from Country at Heart, t-shirts from Explore West Plains, and Chamber gift certificates from the West Plains Chamber of Commerce.

Howell County Health Department will provide an activity, as well as have their new mobile unit open for tours. Vaccinations will also be available that day. MU Extension – Stephanie and Hilary will provide a cooking demo or food demo with samples.

Featured artists and their projects include:

Cleo Cockrum and Naomi Saunders – Introduction to the mountain dulcimer. Participants will learn a couple of traditional songs and basic strumming techniques on the mountain dulcimer. Practice instruments will be provided by WPCA.

Lee Copen – Accomplished watercolor artist Lee Copen will guide participants through a simple watercolor painting on bookmarks or greeting cards.

Kathy Davis – Hand-loom baby hats – If you have a grand baby coming in the fall or like to donate to those in need, this class is for you. We will be making a simple loom knit baby hat and adding pompom if time permits. It is a fun and easy project, and you will probably get addicted. I once made 100 baby hats while healing from surgery.

Terry Hampton – Calligraphy literally means “beautiful writing,” and there are many styles of decorative writing throughout the world that fall into this category. The one that I have used most in my own projects over the years is a lettering called “Chancery Italic Hand.” It is simple yet elegant and the basics are fairly easy to learn. I’ll lead attendees in some simple practice pen strokes to help them catch on to the technique, and then we’ll write a short phrase as a take-home project, and everyone can also pen their name in Chancery.

Dawn King – Quilling is the art of rolling, bending, and creasing narrow strips of paper into coils and scrolls. The shapes are assembled into two- and three- dimensional decorative designs. Try your hand at manipulating paper and soon you will be “on a roll” when you start assembling your quilled shapes into intricate designs.

Barbara Robinette – Area watercolor artist Barbara Robinette will teach how to make your own handmade note cards. Her experience is with 5 X 7” notecards on 140 lb. watercolor paper.  Most of her cards are of flowers/plants in vases and trees/leaves, either drawn with pen and ink and filled in with watercolor or painted freestyle in watercolor.

Tara Shahan – Make a hand-painted alcohol ink ornament as a gorgeous addition to your Christmas tree or give as a gift!  Beautifully designed glass ornaments; no two are exactly alike! These unique ornaments make great gifts, perfect for teachers, a hostess gift, a Secret Santa gift and more! Multiple colors, shades, saturations and metallics are used in the design of each ornament to create different effects: marbling, melting, crackling, pitting, swirls, etc.

Dolores Winkler – Art on material with Derwent Inktense Pencils. Beautiful ink made in a pencil form that can be used on watercolor paper, clothes, material, tennis shoes, canvas, and many more items.  Permanent color. Bright beautiful colors.  Mix with water, aloe gel, or textile medium.   Great for quilters who want to decorate tea towels, make a pillow, or use in a quilt.  A beautiful medium and so versatile.  I like to use fine line pens for details.

The Star Dramatic Company will present its newest production, ‘The Mysterious Beast of Gévaudan’ at the Historic Star Theater in Willow Springs. ‘The Mysterious Beast of Gévaudan’ is written and directed by JoMartin Archuleta and starts Friday, July 21 and Sat July, 22 at 7 pm and Sunday, July 23 at 3 pm, and then again the following weekend, Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29 at 7 pm and Sunday, July 30 at 3  pm.

Inspired by actual events, our little tale takes place in the early fall of 1776 in a little remote village in the Gévaudan region of Southern France, under the reign of King Louis XV. Our story follows the struggles of a poor peasant family who were plagued by a mysterious beast. It roamed the countryside for three years attacking well over 200 people and killing over 100. Now, nearly 250 years later, it’s a gruesome piece of little-known history that remains a mystery to this day.
