Three-Day Spencer Meagher Plein Air Workshop
Aug 25 @ 9:00 am – Aug 27 @ 4:00 pm

West Plains Arts Alliance members, the West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and the Harlin Museum of West Plains (Harlin), will bring renowned artist Spencer Meagher to town for a three-day plein air workshop. The workshop will be held 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily August 25, 26 and 27, 2022. Thursday and Friday will begin at the pavilion at Galloway Creek Nature Park, and Saturday’s workshop will be held at Twin Bridges.

WPCA Coordinator Janey Hale says, “West Plains Council on the Arts is fortunate to host a Plein Air workshop by Spencer Meagher. Meagher is a well-known Plein Air and studio artist. He has been juried into some of the premier events in the US. He is proficient in watercolor, acrylic, and oil, and is an excellent teacher of these media.”

Spencer Meagher first discovered his love for art as a young child. He found he was able to express himself through drawing and painting. He refined his skills over many decades with practice and dedication. As an adult, he has attended many workshops to gain a better understanding of his craft. Spencer now paints full time and travels all over the country attending competitions and shows, as well as teaching workshops. Spencer is a Plein Air and studio artist who works in watercolor, oil and acrylic. When he is not traveling, he works out of his studio in Mt. Vernon, IL.

“Three days painting rocky rivers, wooded hillsides and open meadows in one of the most scenic regions in Missouri,” says Meagher. “Bring your paints and join me as we learn how to simplify complex scenes, create strong compositions and mix colors that reflect the mood of the scene.”

Students will have the opportunity to follow along as Spencer demonstrates the process of painting acrylic/oil en Plein Air. The class will focus on various components and techniques used to apply these viscous paints. Emphasis will be placed on developing a strong drawing as the backbone of your painting. Students will learn Spencer’s tried and true method of accurately capturing the framework of the scene before you. We will discuss editing “clutter” out of your design.

Obstacles unique to Plein Air will also be addressed, i.e., changing light, temperatures, wind, bugs, curious on-lookers. The class will help students build confidence while painting in public.

Class structure is appropriate for ALL skill levels. Students should come prepared to paint as many as two 11×14”paintings each day of the workshop. Bring additional panels or paper to do exercises on.

This class will be limited to a smaller size than most so Meagher can spend adequate amounts of time with each participant.

Total cost for the three-day workshop is $300, payable at time of registration. The registration form is available to download from the website at http://westplainsarts.org or you can call 417-293-2325 to request a copy be mailed to you. Space is limited for this workshop, and the registration deadline is August 15, 2022.

Details about supplies, etc. will be sent via email to those who register.

A collection of his plein air paintings is viewable on the website at Spencer Meagher – Portfolio of Works.

Live Theater for children, grades 3-6 ~ Bold, Brave, Curious! @ West Plains Civic Center
Sep 8 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am

“Bold, Brave, Curious!” will be presented on Wednesday, October 12 in the Civic Center theater. The 60-minute play, recommended for grades 3-6, illuminates the power of friendship and empowers young people to examine friendship, bias, community, and individual power.

West Plains Council on the Arts and Missouri State University-West Plains, University/Community Programs (U/CP) have partnered to bring this Metro Theater (MTC) production to West Plains.

Nine-year-old Delilah has sworn to be BFFs with Lupe and Stanley, but when Stanley’s foster mom falls ill, secrets and lies threaten to tear the friends apart. Can the mysterious, magical object they find in Grandmomma’s attic bring them back together? This first production of MTC’s 50th anniversary season is the next chapter in St. Louis-based playwright Mariah Richardson’s ongoing series about Madeline Delilah, a thoughtful and precocious girl, whose story first appeared on the
than 11 years ago with the world premiere of Delilah’s Wish.

There will be two daytime performances for area grade 3-6 students free-of-charge – 10:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. Phone 417-255-7966 to book your students into a daytime performance, or email info@westplainsarts.org for further information.

This event is co-sponsored by Missouri State UniversityWest Plains, University/Community Programs, and the West Plains Council on the Arts, with partial funding provided by the Missouri
Arts Council, a stage agency.

Live Music ~ Bryan Copeland @ Wages Brewing Co.
Sep 9 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Welcome talented musician Bryan Copeland to his Wages debut in what promises to be a wonderful show. There is no cover charge.
See more information about Bryan on his Facebook page Bryan Copeland and Luna J and in his artist bio here:
Bryan Copeland has been writing and making music in Springfield since the inception of Luna J. in 2008. His original music has a vast range of influences; classic rock, blues, funk, jazz, and pop. Bryan is known for his versatility, going from Johnny Cash to Will Smith in an instant without missing a beat. His usage of loop pedals will sometimes make people mistake his solo shows as a full band.
Bryan has shared the stage with some big names and Grammy nominated and winning musicians from different eras over their career, including:
The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Robert Cray (Multiple Grammy winner, blues hall of famer, Eric Clapton/John Mayer/BB King collaborator), Jake Wesley Rogers, Maxwell Hughes (Grammy nominee, as a member of The Lumineers), Jason Ricci (one of the best blues harp players ever, played 2015 Rock and roll hall of fame induction with Zach Brown and Tom Morello), Jackson Stokes (tours with the Allman Brothers revival), and many others.
He has also been featured on local and regional radio and TV countless times; from Ozarks Live performances, to the Emmy winning The Mystery Hour, and radio stations from Poplar Bluff to Lake of the Ozarks. During the pandemic, he just barely missed out on being on NBC’s The Voice, and in 2021 he turned down a recording deal with record label, SSM Nashville.
Bryan has recently joined up with Sofar Sounds, who book intimate and secret songwriter shows in different cities across the US. Many artists have gotten their start working with Sofar; such as Billie Eilish, Tank and the Bangas, etc.
