The West Plains Photography Club currently has 34 members and meetings are at 6:30 p.m. the second Monday of each month in the Missouri State University-West Plains Creative Discovery Center, 411 West Main Street, Suite 1. Everyone regardless of age or ability is invited to join the club which has no membership dues.
The purpose of the club is to share and support everyone’s passion for photography arts whether they are a beginner or have been engaged in photography for many years. Present members include some who do not even own a camera to professionals who make a living by selling their art. Modernity is the fifth and final installment to “Celebrating 250 years of America in the Ozarks” conversation series. Free to attend and open to the public.
Attendees will be invited to share stories and thoughts about how the Ozarks are part of the American tapestry. Tools and resources of the OHRC will be highlighted as components to preserve the cultural distinctions of the Ozarks.
More about Silvey
Silvey is a graduate of Ava High School and received a bachelor’s degree in history education from Missouri State University (MSU) in 1964. She earned a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Missouri.
Silvey was employed at MSU-WP for 38 years. She was a history instructor from 1968 to 1991, then worked as a director of development until 2006. After her departure from the campus, she served as vice president of advancement for the Community Foundation of the Ozarks and the Ozarks Medical Center Foundation.
Silvey is widely known for her volunteerism and dedication to public service. She has served on multiple university, civic, and governmental boards and committees and has consistently supported initiatives that benefit both the campus and the broader community.
Silvey has also received numerous honors and awards including the Business and Professional Women’s Woman of the Year Award, the West Plains Chamber of Commerce’s Volunteer of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Awards, Outstanding Rotarian for Community Service Award, Mountain Grove Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the university’s Staff Community Service Award, Granvil Vaughan Founder’s Award and the Distinguished Staff Award. She was inducted into the Wall of Fame at MSU during a special ceremony in 2012. When Hass-Darr Hall opened in 2018, it included the Carol Silvey Student Union, a space for students to gather for studying, snacking, or relaxing.
“Modernity and the Ozarks” will be advertised and discussed on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 12:15 – 12:45 p.m., on the KUKU 100.3 FM radio show, “High Noon in American History with Cowboy Rick.”
