“Art and Words in Motion” is an exhibition of text-art mobiles by Shane Baker. It will be on display on the second floor of the Ozarks Small Business Incubator (OzSBI) in October through December during regular hours of operation, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays-Fridays. The West Plains Council on the Arts (WPCA) and Ozarks Small Business Incubator (OzSBI) have partnered to bring quarterly art displays to the incubator. Local artist Marc Brannan’s works will be featured inside OzSBI’s first floor October 3 through the end of December 2022. Visitors may view the display at the incubator during OzSBI’s business hours, anytime between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Marc Brannan grew up on the family farm near Willow Springs, Missouri, and currently lives and works in West Plains. He started playing with cameras and taking pictures at a very young age. He loved playing in the old barn and enjoyed being outdoors as much as possible surrounded by nature. His parents nurtured his desire to travel and see new places. His dad encouraged him to learn and enjoy history, especially the history of his family and where they came from.

Artist Statement:

“I have always enjoyed the stories of my mom attending one-room schools when she was a kid, and I think that is a big reason I seek them out to photograph today. There are less of them around every year, as a lot of them slowly fall into disrepair and collapse unless they have been cared for or restored over the years. I love incorporating them into my landscape photography as much as I can, especially as a way of preserving their history. I also enjoy nature photography and have started trying to capture more shots of wildlife, both in and out of our area. I would go for a drive out in the country and notice the old townships along the way that are slowly disappearing. I would try to find an old store, or church, and if I was lucky, the old schoolhouse. Something historical that could share a little bit of that town’s history. I also strive to meet with the owners of those buildings or residents, to help provide personal accounts of their history. A lot of the time, they are stories that won’t be documented in any history books. At some point, I would like to put together a book of photos, possibly a history of schoolhouses and townships that I have searched out in my efforts.

Ozark Artery, in partnership with The Yellow House, is hosting an art show which is free to the public.

The show will be open on select days over a two-week timeframe, including Nov. 17, 23 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Nov. 26 from noon to 6 p.m. in conjunction with Small Business Saturday. A reception will be held Friday, Nov. 18 from 4-8 p.m., free and open to all.

For artists interested in participating, entries will be accepted at the Yellow House, 209 W. Trish Knight St., Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Cost to enter is $5 for one piece or $10 for two or three pieces. Limit three pieces. Cash prizes, to be determined by number of entries, will be awarded to winners.

All mediums will be accepted by artists of all ages, but youth entries will not be judged in a separate division. Work must be original, no kits and no copies. Pieces must be wired for hanging. No saw-tooth hangers. In the case of 3D works, suitable display equipment must be provided by the artist. Artists are encouraged to offer their work for sale, but it is not a requirement.

From organizers: “It’s time to start thinking about Christmas presents. In this class you will create two glass-etched pie dishes. You will be able to keep one and give the other as a gift or keep both if you want! There are several designs available for you to choose from and you will have the option to paint your etching if you so desire. Pick two designs when registering for workshop.”

An art show within an art show. Come meet Alicia Mau, one of southwest Missouri’s boldest artists. She will be accompanied by her husband Chris who will be playing some of his music via guitar. This will be happening along with the Ozark Artery Art Show. Shop local Saturday. There will be over 50 pieces of local artist up for sale. Come out and enjoy.
